AMA co-sponsors meeting on water pollution and health

Article Abstract:

Speakers at the International Conference on Water Pollution and Health conference described the need for improved physician education about the problem and prevention of water-borne microbial diseases. Such diseases are estimated to sicken about 1 million Americans annually. The highly publicized outbreak of Cryptosporidium that affected 400,000 people in Milwaukee, WI, in Apr 1993 was the worst reported incident of its kind in US history, but surveys show that water contamination in groundwater and public distribution systems is widespread.

Match bias irks students; new model sought for residency selection process

Article Abstract:

The American Medical Assn (AMA) Interim Meeting has called for the overhaul of current residency programs because the computerized formula employed in determining the placement of medical graduates is flawed. The AMA's call follows criticism of the formula by both residents and students who said that the algorithm used by the National Matching Program unfairly penalized at least one out of every six graduates participating in the annual residency match program.
