Age of discovery (1400-1650): map making

Article Abstract:

Global exploration began during the fifteenth century, when sailors began to plot their journeys by drawing maps of the regions they had visited. Many sailors suffered ill health and injuries through accidents on voyages. Malnutrition caused the majority of deaths at sea, due mainly to poor stocks of fresh food and water. Hygiene was minimal which added to insanitary conditions aboard ships. Exploration of the arctic regions was limited due to the extreme cold sailors suffered due to a lack of protective clothing.

Driving home the dangers

Article Abstract:

Results of a survey carried out in Greater London and Manchester, England, on the risks of travelling by taxi or minicab reveal that they are not always a safe option. The study shows that minicab passengers are at most risk from attack or dangerous driving. Women and old people are particularly vulnerable. The Suzy Lamplugh Trust has published a passenger's charter for those using minicabs and taxis and is calling for new laws to protect passengers.
