Stab wounds associated with terrorist activities in Israel

Article Abstract:

A review of stab wounds suffered by Israelis at the hands of Palestinians during the Intifada reveals that terrorist knife attacks are serious and often deadly. Between Jul 1987 and Apr 1994, 125 men and 29 women were attacked with a knife. A majority of stabbings occurred in the morning and 44% of the victims were stabbed more than once. The chest and neck were the most frequent targets and the large number of wounds to the upper right back indicates the attacker often approached from behind. One-fourth of the victims died and 28% of the survivors were seriously wounded.

Self-reported frequent mental distress among adults - United States, 1993-1996

Article Abstract:

A substantial percentage of Americans suffer from frequent mental distress (FMD). FMD is defined as poor mental health for 14 or more days out of the previous 30 days. When this question was asked during the 1993-1996 Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System, 8.6% of the Americans surveyed said they had FMD. Unemployed people, widows and widowers, poor people, those with little education and some ethnic groups were most likely to have FMD. Among both men and women, FMD was most common in 18- to 24-year-olds and least common in the elderly.
