All for one

Article Abstract:

Lambeth Healthcare NHS Trust set up a case management and outreach team to deal with mentally ill people. The team is led by a nurse rather than the team psychiatrist. The assessment and treatment team deals with new cases from a community health centre and staff work hard to deal with a varied client group and the team decides who is treated rather than a psychiatrist. They adopt a holistic approach to the assessment process and will spend about 90 minutes with each person taking a complete personal history before a care plan is drawn up. Staff liaise with GPs about specific clients.

Future perfect

Article Abstract:

Two groups with involvements in the UK National Health Service (NHS) have collaborated on a project to improve industrial relations in the health service. The King's Fund and trade union Unison brought together interested NHS trust managers and union representatives to develop new collaborative approaches which would improve services for patients. They also developed strategies to introduce the new approaches into their trusts. The changes have been particularly effective in developing teamwork and openness in a time of change, and in empowering staff.

Election with no winners

Article Abstract:

Dave Prentis is likely to succeed Rodney Bickerstaffe as general secretary of Unison, the UK health union, although he has not found popularity with nurses. There is little excitement about the election for the position, and it is possible that some nurses will return their voting papers without casting a vote. Nurses need to know how much importance Prentis will place on making changes to the nursing profession and their union.
