Alterations in Liver ATP Homeostasis in Human Nonalcoholic Steatohepatitis A Pilot Study
Article Abstract:
People with a type of fatty liver disease called nonalcoholic steatohepatitis have abnormal ATP metabolism in their liver. Researchers used nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy to measure ATP metabolism in the livers of 8 patients with nonalcoholic steatohepatitis and 7 healthy volunteers. They were all given fructose injections to deplete their ATP levels. The healthy volunteers rapidly replenished those levels after the injection but the patients with nonalcoholic steatohepatitis did not. Even overweight volunteers replenished their ATP levels more slowly than normal weight individuals.

Cytokines in alcoholic and nonalcoholic steatohepatitis
Article Abstract:
Drugs that inhibit tumor necrosis factor may be effective in treating some liver diseases. Tumor necrosis factor is a pro-inflammatory protein that occurs naturally in the body. However, it also assists in the regeneration of liver tissue after an injury. Consequently, researchers must develop a drug that inhibits the inflammatory process without preventing regeneration.

Nonalcoholic fatty liver disease: an underrecognized cause of cryptogenic cirrhosis
Article Abstract:
Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease can cause liver cirrhosis that can be very difficult to diagnose just with blood tests that measure liver function. Also, patients may not have any symptoms of liver disease. A liver biopsy is the best method for detecting this type of liver disease.
