An International Study of Patient Compliance With Hemodialysis

Article Abstract:

Differences in patient compliance with hemodialysis could explain international differences in mortality rates from end-stage kidney disease. Hemodialysis patients in the US typically have higher mortality rates than in other countries. Researchers asked nurses and nephrologists in the US, Sweden and Japan to record the number of missed dialysis treatments among their patients. In the US, 2.3% of all treatments were missed compared to no treatments missed in Japan and Sweden. The high compliance rates among Japanese could explain their better prognosis compared to Americans.

The Changing Managed Care-Public Health Interface

Article Abstract:

Managed care plans have the opportunity to combine medicine and public health because they cover specific populations. Some plans are cooperating with public health agencies in the areas of health care delivery, information exchange, and community interventions. There are many challenges ahead, but this should not deter managed care plans from integrating public health policies into their services.
