Analysis of LMP and TAP polymorphisms by polymerase chain reaction-restriction fragment length polymorphism in rheumatoid arthritis

Article Abstract:

Two genes related to immune response are probably not involved in rheumatoid arthritis. Rheumatoid arthritis is characterized by inflammatory destruction of joints, and may have a viral or autoimmune origin. Using a new amplification strategy for gene typing, researchers tested 60 rheumatoid arthritis patients and 102 healthy volunteers for variations in the large molecular weight proteasome gene (LMP) and the transporter associated with antigen processing gene (TAP). There was no pattern of variations in these genes associated with the disease.

Association of oestrogen receptor gene polymorphisms with age at onset of rheumatoid arthritis

Article Abstract:

Estrogen receptor genes may influence the age of onset of rheumatoid arthritis (RA) symptoms in women. RA is an autoimmune, inflammatory joint disease that vary in severity with menstruation, menopause, and pregnancy. Researchers analyzed estrogen receptor genes in 70 men and 240 women with RA and a larger group of healthy people. A particular variant of the gene was associated with earlier onset of RA in women, but not men. Another genetic expression was associated with RA later in women's life.

Tumour necrosis factor gene polymorphisms as severity markers in rheumatoid arthritis

Article Abstract:

Differences in the gene for tumor necrosis factor (TNF) may explain some of the genetic variation in rheumatoid arthritis. TNF is a pro-inflammatory protein that plays a very important role in rheumatoid arthritis.
