Antibiotic-associated diarrhea: it can be serious

Article Abstract:

A potential side effect of antibiotics is mild diarrhea, but a more serious, usually treatable, condition called pseudomembranous colitis (PMC) requires immediate medical attention. PMC is caused by an intestinal imbalance in the growth of the bacteria. When antibiotics disrupt the natural order, a toxin is produced that affects the lining of the colon and rectum.
