Approval for pesticide toxicity testing in humans draws criticism

Article Abstract:

The US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) issues a ruling that permits toxicity testing of pesticides on humans ending a 2005 moratorium on such testing imposed by the US Congress and signed by President Bush. The EPA is confident that the stringent ethical standards it has established will ensure that the ruling is not abused but its critics maintain that the many loopholes will enable pesticide manufacturers to sidestep regulations leaving human lives at risk.

Researchers critical of TV drug ads

Article Abstract:

A study reports that television advertisements of prescription drugs offer limited educational value like information about disease causes and those at risk, but use emotional appeals to suggest that the medication would help consumers regain control over their life. The researchers believe that the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) must oversee such advertising and impose conditions or limits where needed to protect public health.

Trials planned for testing nonsurgical approach to replacing heart valves

Article Abstract:

Researchers are testing an artificial heart valve that can be inserted into a catheter and pushed up a patient's leg vein to the heart, pushing aside the damaged valve and inserting the new one. This would allow elderly patients to avoid open-heart surgery. If the treatment is successful, it could eventually replace open-heart surgery altogether for replacing heart valves.
