'Essential components now in place' for clinical testing of cancer vaccine strategies, experts say
Article Abstract:
Scientists are defining the structures of tumor antigens which is accelerating the pace of cancer vaccine research. At the Cancer Research Institute's first biennial conference on cancer vaccines in 1994, researchers reported on the status of vaccine research. Scientists are identifying the structure of tumor antigens recognized by a component of the immune system called T cells. This achievement allows the development and clinical testing of cancer vaccines. In late 1994, researchers were experimenting with whole-cell vaccines, protein or peptide vaccines, and viral and microbial vector vaccines. Carbohydrate vaccines, heat shock vaccines, anti-idiotype vaccines and DNA or RNA vaccines were also being studied. Although some preliminary research results appear promising, investigators note that tumor cells often develop mechanisms to evade the immune system.

Injury prevention must be part of nation's plan to reduce health care costs, say control experts
Article Abstract:
Experts discussed a national plan to prevent injuries at the Second World Conference on Injury Control. Billions of dollars are spent on the treatment and rehabilitation of patients with different types of injuries. Most of these injuries could and should have been prevented. Other injury prevention programs have been successful in decreasing the incidence of injuries and their associated costs. The number of motor vehicle accident injuries and fatalities has declined since the passage of highway safety legislation in late 1960s. Highway safety programs have reduced the number of drunk drivers and increased safety belt use. Different preventive measures could be taken to decrease the number of sports injuries. Another preventive measure may be to pass mandatory helmet laws throughout the US for bicycle and motorcycle riders.
