Blocking effect of vitamin C in exercise-induced asthma

Article Abstract:

Taking vitamin C may have a protective effect in some patients with exercise-induced asthma. Researchers randomly assigned 20 asthmatics to take oral vitamin C or a placebo one hour before a treadmill exercise session and measured lung function after the session. One week later the test was repeated with each group receiving the other pill. Nine asthmatics who took vitamin C experienced a protective effect on lung function during exercise. Five of these patients took vitamin C for two more weeks and four continued to experience a protective effect.

Victory at C

Article Abstract:

Cloning of two sodium-dependent vitamin C transporters, SVCT1 and SVCT2, shows how the vitamin is taken from urine after being absorbed from food and then accumulated in certain body compartments. Co-transport by SVCT1 and SVCT2 involves one molecule of ascorbic acid and two sodium ions, and is thus electrogenic.
