Association of locomotor complaints and disability in the Rotterdam study

Article Abstract:

There may be an association between a loss of motor function in the lower limbs and increasing age, morning stiffness and joint pain. Researchers interviewed 1,901 men and 3,135 women, all over the age of 55, to evaluate their degree of morning stiffness, pain in one or more joints, and motor function. Overall, they found that 24.5% of the men and 40.5% of the women had some form of limitation in their motor function. This reported disability increased with increasing age. Twenty-percent of the men and 35% of the women reported pain in at least one lower limb joint. Less than 1% of the men and 2% of the women reported pain in the hip, knee, and foot. Of the people with morning stiffness, 4.9% were men and 10.4% were women.

Dietary iron and risk of myocardial infraction in the Rotterdam Study

Article Abstract:

Researchers conducted a study to investigate whether dietary iron is linked with increased risk of fatal and nonfatal myocardial infraction in the Rotterdam Study. Participants included 4,802 people who had no known history of myocardial infarction and whose dietary information were available. Researchers found no association between total iron intake and risk of myocardial infarction after adjustment for sex and age. However, a positive association was found with heme iron intake and risk of myocardial infarction. The results reveal that a high dietary heme iron intake is related to increased risk of myocardial infarction.

Associations of radiological osteoarthritis of the hip and knee with locomotor disability in the Rotterdam Study

Article Abstract:

Elderly people may have pain and lower-limb disability which significantly impair daily activities, although radiography may not reveal it. Researchers surveyed 2,895 people aged 55 years or older in Rotterdam, Netherlands. Twenty percent of men and 32% of women reported difficulty getting in and out of bed or a car, walking, or climbing stairs. One third or fewer of those surveyed had evidence of osteoarthritis on x-rays of the hips and knees. Disability was best predicted by older age, pain, and morning stiffness.
