Physicians disciplined by a state medical board
Article Abstract:
Research is needed to identify those physicians who are most likely to commit offenses leading to disciplinary action so preventive measures can be taken. Between Oct, 1995 and Apr, 1997, 375 physicians licensed by the Medical Board of California were disciplined. About one-third of the cases involved negligence or incompetence, 14% involved substance abuse, 10% involved inappropriate contact with patients and 9% involved fraud. Almost half had their license revoked or suspended. Disciplined physicians were more likely to be men and less likely to be board certified in a specialty.

Two Tiers of Physicians in France
Article Abstract:
There are two tiers of physicians in France: the generalists and the specialists. Specialists spend more time in training, make more money and have higher status. Most primary care is dominated by generalists, who make up half of all physicians and 60% of private practitioners. General internal medicine is not a specialty as it is in the US. Most internists practice in hospitals and there are very few in the community. The number of pediatricians is declining, especially general pediatricians in the community.
