Batten down the hatches

Article Abstract:

A UK National Health Service hospital is trying to reduce the amount of violence faced by its staff by training them to cope with violent incidents and in using techniques to de-escalate the situation. Another hospital has a police station on site. Some are introducing more security equipment, such as closed circuit television and panic buttons. One London nurse has carried out a study of incidents of violence to try to persuade his hospital there are many more cases of violence than they had accepted. One Trust has introduced counselling service for nurses who have been assaulted.

Honest PREP-aration

Article Abstract:

UKCC members have expressed concern over the possibility that practitioners might lie about having completed the compulsory professional updating required by PREP. To renew their registration, practitioners are required to sign a self-verification statement confirming that they have undertaken the required five days' professional training every three years. The potential problem associated with this process has been acknowledged by UKCC registrar Colin Ralph, and the UKCC will give careful consideration to ways of monitoring PREP self-verification.

Shallow standards: the latest Patient's Charter league tables have just come out. But is the scramble to met targets pushing out good quality patient care in favour of a have-a-nice-day culture?

Article Abstract:

Some hospitals are struggling to meet targets set out in the Patient's Charter and some nurse managers belive the quality of care is being compromised. The problems to meet waiting time targets are mainly confined to A&E departments and there have been cases of figures being changed to comply with the targets. Some nurses have been threatened with disciplinary action if targets are not met.
