Beyond miracle babies

Article Abstract:

There are many challenges facing nurses working in special care baby units. They must often care for babies who are severely premature and unwell, and may find that families rely heavily on them for support and for advice about treatment options. Very premature babies are now more likely to survive than in the past, but many still die or are left with severe neurological damage. Nurses in special care baby units will therefore have to be prepared to support families who have lost their baby.

The effects of multiple medication in the elderly: as the body's reaction to drugs alters with age it is important to review the risks in older patients on multiple medication

Article Abstract:

Older people receive 50% of all prescribed drugs and may require multiple drug therapy, which can increase the risk of drug interactions and adverse reactions. The body handles drugs by absorption, distribution, metabolism and elimination, each of which is affected by age. Medication related problems are responsible for 10-30% of of admissions of the elderly to hospital, and regular reviews of an elderly patient's drug regimen is recommended. A case study illustrates some of the issues.

Lifelines

Article Abstract:

Total parenteral nutrition (TPN) may be necessary in very low birth-weight or premature babies. TPN must accommodate rapid growth that occurs between 27 and 32 weeks. Standard TPN formulas should include glucose, amino acids, lipids, electrolytes, trace elements and vitamins. Lipid delivery via a syringe apart from the amino acid, glucose and electrolyte combination allows the withdrawal of lipids if hyperlipaemia occurs.
