Breach of trust: allegations of systematic bullying at South Cumbria Community and Mental Health NHS Trust have fed growing doubts over the capacity of harassment policies to protect staff
Article Abstract:
Allegations of bullying have been made about management at the South Cumbria Community and Mental Health NHS Trust by health visitors and school nurses. Their statements showed incidents of intimidating techniques at interview, vendettas against the staff, broken confidences and public humiliation. A director of nursing at Airedale NHS Trust was drafted in to investigate the allegations, and found that there was an irretrievable breakdown of relations between nurses and management, although there was not a sufficient case for any dismissals. Bullying in the NHS is claimed to be on the increase, and staff need to understand how harassment policies work.

Have badge, will travel: nurses no longer have to risk their long-term career prospects if they wish to work abroad
Article Abstract:
Several NHS trusts have offered support to nurses who wish to work abroad, following an agreement with the Voluntary Service Overseas (VSO) charity. Nurses can be released from their jobs for up to three years without being penalised or downgraded when they return. More trusts are expected to follow as the VSO emphasises that work overseas enables staff to develop professionally. Returning staff should be offered similar posts at equivalent salaries enjoyed before working overseas.
