Bring eye and face safety into focus

Article Abstract:

A report by Prevent Blindness America of a staggering 2.4 million/year eye injuries of which nearly one-sixth happen on the job, emphasizes the importance of eye safety. The EPA has adopted in Jul. 1994 an improved Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) standard for personal protective equipment that calls for employers to provide employees with such equipment when subjected to specified eye and face hazards. US companies such as Beckman Instruments and Rohm & Haas have risen to the challenge to the extent of improving on the OSHA regulation.

More than meets the eye

Article Abstract:

Studies offer conflicting views over the risk employees with contact lenses face in hazardous work environments. While many, such as the one conducted by R.H. Rengstorff and C.J. Black supports the idea that contact lenses act more as a protective covering, some firms avoid hiring employees with contact lenses. However, under the American With Disabilities Act of 1990, employers are warned against not employing people just because they are wearing contact lenses.

Put your feet first: if not used properly, protective footwear can do more harm than good

Article Abstract:

Companies should require their workers to wear footwear designed to protect against potentially serious and crippling injuries. However, they should take care to select footwear with the proper design and fit, since shoes that are not properly designed and do not fit properly can lead to even more serious injuries. Companies are also advised to identify hazards to employees' feet in the workplace.
