Buying-out appeals

Article Abstract:

A working party is considering a national scheme of direct cash payments to settle outstanding nurse regrading appeals. About 30,000 appeals await decision. The appellate procedure has proved slow, expensive and damaging to morale. Some health authorities have already successfully offered one-off payments. However, unions consider sums of 300-500 pounds sterling insulting compared with potential payments to nurses with successful appeals. Others consider the payments distract from the original intention to achieve appropriate grading for nurses.

Managing success

Article Abstract:

Seven regional nursing officers (RNOs) surveyed dispute the findings of the Department of Health and the Institute of Health Services Management that a nursing background can restrict management prospects. Some gained their position via a succession of nursing posts and have not undertaken formal management training. Some believe nurses have been given wider opportunities via the new restructured health service. Some agree that nurses may find it difficult to obtain general management posts but believe it is not impossible.

Home truths

Article Abstract:

Community nurses are at greater risk of injury from manual handling than hospital nurses. Space and equipment is usually limited. Patients often resist attempts to reorganise space efficiently. Many refuse the installation of hoists. Delays in equipment supply is also a problem. Patient education on the dangers to nurses is necessary. Supply of equipment and training for nurses is vital.
