Florida mulls regulation of direct contracting

Article Abstract:

The Florida Legislature has approved a pilot program in which Medicaid will contract directly with doctors and other healthcare providers instead of a health maintenance organization (HMO) or health insurer. The Legislature has also created a task force to explore whether direct contracting requires regulation. The arrangement could save money by eliminating intermediary groups such as HMOs from managed care. Health insurers and HMOs oppose direct contracting.

For-profit conversions spawn new sources of charity

Article Abstract:

For-profit hospital chains that acquire nonprofit hospitals must set up charitable foundations, according to federal law. This has increased hospital care for indigent patients in such places as Alexandria, LA, where the Rapides Hospital was acquired by Columbia HCA Health Care Corp. States should require the foundations to dedicate funds to medical care for the poor, rather than spend on other types of projects.
