In a league of their own

Article Abstract:

The UK government has identified 35 'three-star' National Health Service (NHS) trusts. These trusts will have a high degree of freedom in deciding how to use their share of the 155 million pounds sterling NHS Performance Fund. There are 12 trusts which have received no stars under the new rating system, and they could be taken over by managers of the best trusts.

Call for mental health staff to review patient danger risks

Article Abstract:

NHS national director for mental health Louis Appleby claims that mental health staff often underestimates the risk of their patients harming themselves or others because of their defensive attitude toward undue public criticism. Professionals should not be over-optimistic when a patient with a history of violence or self-harm appears to have improved, but high-risk patients should always be monitored under the enhanced care program approach.

Trust mergers and you

Article Abstract:

Around 40 English National Health Service (NHS) trusts are to merge on Apr 1 1998. The government's aim in encouraging mergers is to improve patient care. The change will have little effect on the ordinary nurse but some senior nurses may face redundancy, particularly if there is rationalization of services. NHS staff and analysts are generally happy that NHS structures are changing, but lessons from the corporate world provide a warning that not all mergers are successful. A list of merging trusts and their budgets is included.
