Can physicians diagnose strengths and weaknesses in health plans?

Article Abstract:

Published assessments of health care plans should include input by doctors and other health professionals included in the plan. Participating doctors could complement the overall assessment by providing prospective patients and doctors who wish to join the plan with a doctor's perspective of the plan's quality. This could also provide a basis for internal quality control. These assessments should be simple, confidential, and inexpensive to administrate. Evaluations should also distinguish between objective comments about the plan and a doctor's job satisfaction.

Can genetics help diagnose the hyper-IgD and periodic fever syndrome?

Article Abstract:

Many patients with the hyper-IgD and periodic fever syndrome (HIDS) have a mutation in the gene for an enzyme called mevalonate kinase. However, not all patients have the mutation, so genetic screening may not be possible in this case. This syndrome causes recurring fever, swollen lymph glands, joint pain, vomiting, and diarrhea.

Biochemical test to help diagnose aortic dissection

Article Abstract:

Elevated blood levels of a protein called smooth-muscle myosin heavy chain may indicate that a patient has a ruptured aortic aneurysm, according to a study of 95 patients. An aneurysm occurs when the wall of a blood vessel tears. When it happens in the aorta, it can be life-threatening.
