Cefmetazole sodium (zefazone)
Article Abstract:
Infection with a bacterial microorganism is a frequent occurrence in hospitals and may result in death if left untreated. Drugs called antibiotics are used to kill bacteria, but certain types of bacteria may become resistant to their actions. Cephalosporins are antibiotics that are similar in chemical structure to penicillin. A new cephalosporin, called cefmetazole sodium, was recently marketed in the United States for the treatment of susceptible bacteria. Cefmetazole is a second generation cephalosporin, which means it can kill more diverse types of bacteria than first generation cephalosporins. Cefmetazole is active in test tubes against Bacteroides fragilis, a type of potentially lethal bacteria, which is frequently involved in infections of the abdomen and pelvis. Cefmetazole must be given into a vein (IV); 70 to 80 percent of a dose can be recovered in the urine in the first 12 hours after it is administered. Patients with kidney failure may take longer to excrete cefmetazole than normal patients. Cefmetazole may also be used to treat urinary tract infections, pneumonia and skin infections, and may be administered prior to surgery of the vagina, abdomen, colon, rectum, and gall bladder. Adverse effects include local discomfort at the infusion site, rash, headache, chills, fever, nausea, vomiting, vaginal fungal infections and an increased blood urea level. Cefmetazole is a reasonably priced and effective antibiotic, but does not offer any clinical advantage over pre-existing antibiotics. (Consumer Summary produced by Reliance Medical Information, Inc.)
