Chairman spells out plans for OSHA

Article Abstract:

House Subcommittee on Workforce Protection Chmn. Cass Ballenger believes that the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) should lessen its combative stance and instead work more closely with employers to ensure compliance. Ballenger suggests that OSHA inspectors should initially act as advisers tasked with recommending ways for employers to improve workplace conditions. Although his subcommittee intends to lessen the OSHA's regulations, he stressed that this will not come at the expense of workers' welfare.

Watch out for bloodborne pathogens in construction

Article Abstract:

The Occupational Health and Safety Administration (OSHA)'s bloodborne pathogens standard and its relative application to the construction industry are discussed. The OSHA standard is primarily intended for workers in danger of exposure to bodily fluids that may have the human-immunodeficiency and hepatitis-B viruses. While strict construction work is not covered by the standard, maintenance operations are viewed as general-industry activities and are thus covered under the general-duty clause.
