Changing the perceptions of palliative care

Article Abstract:

A fast track training programme conducted by the palliative care team from Hambleton and Richmondshire Primary Care Trust, North Yorkshire helped them to win the Nursing Times Cancer Award 2003. This training programme enabled the nurses to work with people with palliative care needs to become more confident where the programme also blended academic study and clinical practice.

The nurse-led alcohol liaison services at the Queen's medical centre (QMC) in Nottingham helps people who misuse alcohol to turn their lives around. Patients admitted to hospital with alcohol-related disease are referred to the nurses who carry out assessments, organize screening and care management protocols, and provide follow-up in nurse-led, outpatientEs clinics.

Sarah Ryan, a consultant rheumatology nurse at the University Hospital of North Staffordshire, was one of only five nurses to receive an RCN fellowship for her contribution to rheumatology nursing and pain management. She insists that her meteoric rise was never planned and that she was lucky to have had a lot of opportunities.
