Chemical count-down

Article Abstract:

The Montreal Protocol is requiring the phasing out of two extra ozone-depleting chemicals: 1,1,1-Trichloroethane (1.1.1-T) and tetrachloromethane. The current deadlines are Jan 1, 2005 and 2000, respectively; however, these may be brought forward at the next Protocol meeting. Under European law, the deadline for tetrachloromethane is Jan 1, 1998. The chemical 1,1,1-T is currently used extensively in the engineering sector and there is currently no ideal replacement. Suggested replacements include stabilised trichloroethylene and hydrocarbon, aqueous, and semiaqueous systems.

SENSE and NONS sense

Article Abstract:

The European Inspection Project's report 'Solid Enforcement of Substances in Europe - Making SENSE of NONS' has revealed that over 40% of 2,000 chemicals marketed were not adequately labelled or classified. Similarly, around 33% of companies visited were not compliant with the Dangerous Substances Directive. The report also revealed that 17% of chemical identity analysed did not match the information provided the companies.

Article Abstract:

Background to the Health and Safety Executive's new and simpler guidance on the use of chemicals has been published in the British Occupational Hygiene Society's journal 'Annals of Occupational Hygiene'.
