Child benefit

Article Abstract:

A United Kingdom Audit Commission report has criticised children's hospital services. At least 48 parents participated. Findings reflected practice in highly regarded hospitals. The survey found too few paediatric nurse specialists and separate facilities. Children were often admitted inappropriately. Recommendations included reorganisation for greater efficiency and more child-orientated services. At least two nurse specialists should service children's wards at all times. The commission also advocated improving children's community services.

Pioneering assistants

Article Abstract:

The Royal College of Surgeons (RCS) will report on the future of the role of surgeon's assistant in October 1992. Susanne Holmes was appointed cardiac surgeon's assistant in 1989 at the John Radcliffe Hospital, Oxford, England. The RCS will evaluate the role and consider expanding it into other specialities. However, the Royal College of Nursing considers the role of surgeon's assistants beyond the scope of nursing.

Skirting the issue

Article Abstract:

Traditional nurse uniforms are inappropriate for manual handling and may contribute to back injury. Health and Safety regulations emphasise the importance of freedom of movement. Trousers and culottes allow greater flexibility than dresses. New designs should be loose fitting and have stretch waistbands. Belts, buckles and caps restrict the range of movement necessary in safe lifting.
