Children born to HIV-1-infected women in Sweden in 1982-2003

Article Abstract:

A study was conducted to describe the HIV-1 epidemic among childbearing women and their children in Sweden, in order to explore changes in vertical transmission rates and demographic characteristics over time. To keep the number of infected children as low as possible, it is important to continue to provide good access to antenatal case, and offer universal antenatal HIV screening and prophylactic measures against mother-to-child transmission of HIV to all women independent of risk factors, ethnic origin, and economical status.

Phase 2 study of an HIV-1 canarypox vaccine (vCP1452) alone and in combination with rgp120: Negative results fail to trigger a phase 3 correlates trial

Article Abstract:

A phase 2 trial was carried out to determine if a canarypox vaccine candidate (vCP1452) administered with rgp120 subunit protein would qualify for a trial to define a correlate of efficacy. It is seen that the efficacy trial planned for vCP1452 required a vaccine-induced CD[8.sup.plus] CTL frequency of at least 30% and to ensure that the response would be sufficient to define a correlate of immunity, a 42% point estimate was needed with a lower bound of the 95% confidence interval above 30%.

Dose-ranging phase 1 study of TMC120, a promising vaginal microbicide, in HIV-negative and HIV-positive female volunteers

Article Abstract:

A study was conducted to evaluate the short-term safety, tolerability and systemic exposure of a vaginal microbicide gel containing the nonnucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitor TMC120. The findings reveal that the TMC120 was well tolerated and that there were no apparent differences in safety parameters between the 3 concentrations of TMC120 and placebo gel.
