Do transfusions get to the heart of the matter?

Article Abstract:

A survival analysis using proportional hazards modeling demonstrated that the risk of death was estimated to be 3.94 times higher than in patients who underwent transfusion compared with those who did not, adjusting for the influence of time, risk of bleeding, type of myocardial infraction, and procedure. The study also demonstrates that the red blood transfusion might be beneficial in patients with acute myocardial infraction.

Is leukoreduction of blood components for everyone?

Article Abstract:

There is no clear cut evidence that removing white blood cells from all donated blood will benefit most of the patients who receive a blood transfusion. Removing the white blood cells from all donated blood would cost about $500 million a year. This is usually done to avoid impacting the patient's immune system adversely.
