Coadministration of nomegestrol acetate does not diminish the beneficial effects of estradiol on coronary artery dilator responses in nonhuman primates (Macaca fascicularis)
Article Abstract:
The addition of progesterone to estrogen replacement therapy does not appear to reduce the protective effects of estrogen on the coronary arteries of the heart. Estrogen replacement therapy in postmenopausal women reduces the risk of coronary artery disease, but increases the risk of endometrial cancer. Researchers treated monkeys with estrogen alone, or estrogen plus the progestin nomegestrol acetate, along with a high-fat diet. The monkeys given estrogen had less coronary artery constriction and better coronary blood flow than monkeys given no hormones, but they had more endometrial growth. Nomegestrol acetate reduced endometrial proliferation without diminishing the cardioprotective effects of estrogen.

The effects of hormone replacement on the biomechanical properties of the uterosacral and round ligaments in the monkey model
Article Abstract:
The study aims to determine the effects of ovariectomy (OVX) and conjugated euqine estrogens plus medroxyprogesterone acetate (CEE/MPA), or ethinyl estradiol plus norethindrone acetate (EE/NA) on biomechanics of uterosacral (USL) and round (RL) ligaments in postmenopausal (PMP) monkeys. It concluded that CEE/MPA and EE/NA both affect functional biomechanical properties by increasing tensile stiffness in the USL and decreasing it in the RL.

Contrasting effects of two hormone replacement therapies on the cardiovascular and mammary gland outcomes in surgically postmenopausal monkeys
Article Abstract:
Some types of hormone replacement therapy may protect women from heart disease whereas other types may increase the risk of heart disease and breast cancer. In a study of monkeys, conjugated equine estrogens combined with continuous medroxyprogesterone acetate had an adverse effect on the heart and breasts. However, ethinyl estradiol combined with norethindrone acetate had no adverse effect on the heart or breasts.
