Consensus or confusion

Article Abstract:

The consensus statement on the future of learning disability nursing in the UK has failed to establish a clear policy. The statement was based on a discussion paper by Professor David Sines. Recommendations include replacing current mental handicap training with a post-registration course and increasing training in the Project 2000 courses. However, justification for the recommendations is missing. No discussion of alternative options has been presented.

Adapt and survive

Article Abstract:

Learning disability nurse specialists should take measures to ensure their role is not devalued with the implementation of community care in 1993. They should not allow the erosion of their specialist services. They should establish a leading role in primary health care and widen their practice base. They should maintain a high profile and take any opportunity to promote their expertise.
