Coronary-artery bypass surgery and the brain

Article Abstract:

The decline in mental function seen in patients who have a coronary artery bypass could be caused by many different factors. They may have atherosclerosis in the brain as well as the heart, or it could be a complication of the surgery. Researchers are designing drugs to protect the brain from damage during surgery.

Cell therapy for Parkinson's disease

Article Abstract:

Cell therapy using embryonic stem cells may be a promising treatment for Parkinson's disease. The cells would be transplanted into the brain, where they would differentiate into nerve cells that would produce dopamine, a substance that is depleted in Parkinson's patients.

Long-term effect of diabetes and its treatment on cognitive function

Article Abstract:

The therapies for type 1 diabetes were thought to affect the cognitive ability of the patient. The results of diabetes control and complications trial showed no such adverse effects except recurrent hypoglycemia.
