Curbside Consultation Practices and Attitudes Among Primary Care Physicians and Medical Subspecialists
Article Abstract:
Many physicians value informal consultations and request them often. Researchers surveyed 213 primary care physicians and 200 subspecialists to determine their attitudes toward informal consultations. Seventy percent of the primary care physicians and 87% of the subspecialists had participated in at least one informal consultation during the previous week. These consultations were most often requested to decide which diagnostic tests and treatment plans were most effective for specific patients. Seventy-seven percent of the subspecialists believed that these consultations were important, compared to 39% of primary care physicians.

Management of adults recovering from alcohol or other drug problems: relapse prevention in primary care
Article Abstract:
Primary care physicians are in a unique position to help people recovering from alcohol or drug addiction. The initial step is to identify which patients have a history of substance abuse. The physician can provide support and can also refer family members to support groups. The patient can be referred to a 12-step program such as Alcoholics Anonymous or Narcotics Anonymous. Physicians can manage drug-related psychological conditions such as depression and anxiety. Drug management using methadone, naltrexone and disulfiram may also be effective.
