Cyclic thrombocytopenia of apparent autoimmune etiology
Article Abstract:
Thrombocytopenia is an abnormal decline in the number of platelets, the small cell fragments that assist in the clotting mechanism in blood. It is often caused by increased platelet fragility. In some individuals thrombocytopenia is a cyclical disease with periods of irregular platelet count occurring between periods of normal physiology. This study investigates the causes of such cyclical thrombocytopenia in two patients and associates the disease with the presence of immunoglobulins attached to their platelets (platelet-associated IgG). One patient's level of platelet-associated IgG was significantly raised at all time, but was highest during periods of thrombocytopenia. The level decreased from this high just before the platelet levels elevated. In both patients the return to a normal platelet count was delayed by the administration of immunoglobulin. The study suggests that in some patients with cyclical thrombocytopenia, changes in autoantibodies (those produced by the individual against their own tissue) may be important in the genesis of the disease.

Heparin-induced thrombocytopenia: studies with a new low molecular weight heparinoid, Org 10172
Article Abstract:
A new anticoagulant (a substance which prevents blood clotting), Org 10172, which resembles a more commonly used anticoagulant, heparin, may be a useful additional treatment for patients who require anticoagulants and who experience problems because of reaction to heparin. Patients who are treated with heparin for long periods of time frequently develop antibodies against heparin that result in a reduced count of platelets. Platelets are small fragments of blood cells that contain agents which begin the clotting mechanism. An experiment examining the ability of the antibodies formed against heparin to react with Org 10172 was conducted with seventeen patients with a reduced platelet count (thrombocytopenia) caused by heparin treatment. Only three patient's plasmas cross-reacted with the heparinoid, while three other patients received Org 10172 with a good response.

Diets of adults living in houses in multiple occupation
Article Abstract:
The lifestyle and food habits of individuals living in houses in multiple occupations (HMO) and those rehoused by the local council were compared to determine the relationship between housing and diet. Results show that housing conditions exert little influence on nutrient intake although differences in quantity exists between the two groups. The HMO women have lower energy, fat, protein and calcium intakes compared to the council women. As a whole, however, both groups exhibit similar socio-economic characteristics and lifestyle habits.
