DRGs for doctor pay: HCFA proposes bundling hospital, physician services
Article Abstract:
The US Health Care Financing Administration's (HCFA) Office of Research and Development are planning a three-year test run of diagnosis-related groups (DGMs) in early 1998. DGMs would combine physician and hospital payments and base Medicare payments on a per-case rate. The AMA and other medical societies rejected a nationwide DGM proposal in 1987, and oppose the current plan unless major modifications are made. The test would be conducted at three to six sites in New Jersey, Pennsylvania, and New York.
