Data bank access debate

Article Abstract:

The National Practitioner Data Bank may soon charge physicians for a copy of their own records. Under a plan expected to be announced on Jun 1, 1993, all queries processed on paper will cost $10, and electronic queries will cost $6. Hospitals, state licensing boards and other groups who are permitted to access the records will pay $6 per query. However, physicians will receive all reports filed with the bank at no charge. At the same time, consumer groups are pressuring for access to the Data Bank to allow patients to choose their physician.

Dishing the data: Joint Commission to detail performance of health facilities

Article Abstract:

The Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations will issue detailed information on 5,200 accredited hospitals and 3,000 other health care facilities in mid-1994. The information will include evaluation of factors such as nursing care, patient rights and infection control. Separate state reports may be issued, and the data may eventually be available in libraries through electronic databases. The disclosure is part of a trend in medicine to share evaluations of physicians and hospitals more freely with consumers.
