Democratic tobacco bill strong on public health goals
Article Abstract:
A bill supported by Senate Democrats would have a greater impact on the tobacco industry than the settlement reached in June 1997. The bill would increase the per-pack cigarette tax to $1.50, levy larger industry penalties if teen smoking reduction targets are not met, and remove special legal protections regarding lawsuits. The settlement, however, provides more funds for similar projects.

Congress regroups to press comprehensive tobacco bill
Article Abstract:
Congress and the tobacco industry are no longer working together to develop a national tobacco control policy. The industry considers the Jun 20, 1997, settlement no longer valid, and it appears ready to oppose congressional efforts to limit their markets. Congress appears ready to proceed with their legislation, which is led by a measure drafted by Senator John McCain.
