Development of food frequency questionnaires in three population samples of Africa origin from Cameroon, Jamaica and Caribbean migrants to the UK

Article Abstract:

A careful consideration of food intake data is necessary to develop food frequency questionnaires (FFQ) for use in African populations as nutrient intakes vary in different populations. Carbohydrates are the major contributors to energy intakes in Jamaica, while fats are the main energy sources in rural Cameroon. Energy contribution comes mainly from proteins for Caribbeans in Manchester, UK. The FFQ developed for Cameroon has 76 food items, for Jamaica has 69 and for Manchester, UK, has 108 food items.

The habitual diet in rural and urban Cameroon

Article Abstract:

The habitual diet of a rural and urban population in Cameroon, Central Africa, was evaluated. Energy, fat and alcohol intakes were higher in rural men and women than in urban subjects. Fibre, iron, carotene, zinc, potassium and vitamins C, D and E intakes were higher in rural men and women than in urban subjects. The high rates of physical activity in rural areas may explain lower rates of cardiovascular risk factors than in urban dwellers.
