Dietary fibre and plasma lipids
Article Abstract:
The levels of plasma cholesterol and lipid density related to the diets containing fibers, cellulose, guar, legumes, soya beans and whole foods are experimentally determined. Both pectin and guar cause a diminished plasma cholesterol and low density lipid, but with wheat fiber the cholesterol is increased. The average cholesterol-lowering nature of oat fiber is due to the beta-glucan present in the oats. Decreased cholesterol is noticed with psyllium which is a mucilage. The protein and fiber of soya beans, and mixed vegetables and fruits reduce the plasma cholesterol in man.

Supplementation with flaxseed oil versus sunflowerseed oil in healthy young men consuming a low fat diet: effects on platelet composition and function
Article Abstract:
A study of 11 healthy young men from the University of Sydney, wherein five subjects consumed flaxseed and six subjects consumed sunflowerseed oil over a 23-day period in 40 gram quantities per day, indicated the versatility of alpha-linolenic acid-rich oils in comparison with linoleic acid-rich oils in preventing platelet-aggregation, thereby protecting consumers against heart diseases. While the platelet eicosapentaenoic acid level doubled in consumers of flaxseed oil, the level remained stable in the subjects who were administered sunflowerseed oil.

Elevated plasma vitamers of vitamin B6 in patients with chronic renal failure on regular haemodialysis
Article Abstract:
High-performance liquid chromatography was used to measure plasma pyridoxal-5'-phosphate, pyridoxal, pyridoxine and 4-pyridoxic acid in subjects with chronic renal failure and undergoing regular hemodialysis. Results show an elevation of all three vitamers in the subjects undergoing hemodialysis with more than 20-fold elevated concentrations in renal failure patients compared to the controls. These results suggest that pyridoxine should be monitored in patients with renal failure and undergoing hemodialysis due to its neurotoxicity.
