The legacy of Nightingale

Article Abstract:

There is a renewed focus on providing patients with spiritual care as part of an holistic approach to nursing, but defining spiritual care in nursing is not easy. Current nursing thinking on spirituality seems to focus mainly on the search for personal meaning, but also tends to separate religion and spirituality. The RCN standard on palliative nursing topic called 'spiritual support' also puts the onus on the nurse to assess, counsel and document the spiritual needs of the patient. There is no reference to the hospital chaplain.

Treatment without consent

Article Abstract:

Parental consent is not often sought by doctors treating a premature baby in a neonatal intensive care unit. Doctors who act in the patient's best interest without receiving any consent are acting paternalistically. Parents therefore find it difficult to care for their child on their own once the baby is discharged, as they are used to depending on the medical team.
