Discharge from an acute psychiatric ward

Article Abstract:

There are many different factors to take into account when planning to discharge a patient from an acute psychiatric ward. These should include the social factors that may play a role in a relapse or crisis. The Sainsbury Centre for Mental Health acute care in-patient study found that psychiatric patients are frequently not involved in planning for their discharge from an acute ward. Indeed, they are often only informed about the discharge at a very late stage. It is clear that discharge should be planned from the time of admission, with full involvement of community-based mental health professionals.

Lessons from the outside

Article Abstract:

Important lessons about how to minimize the risks presented by people with severe mental illness can be drawn from inquiry reports on killings by mentally ill people being cared for in the community in the UK. It is clear that there are currently inadequate resources to manage community-based mental health facilities effectively. Furthermore, there is a lack of communication between the various agencies with which the mentally ill being cared for in the community may come into contact. It is vital that an appropriate assessment of risk is made and that risk is professionally managed.
