Divided we fall
Article Abstract:
The unity of the pay dispute being undertaken by nurses throughout the United Kingdom is being threatened by the imposition of the full 3% no-strings pay award by a number of local trust hospitals. The nurses must accept such a pay increase, even though they may feel that a national pay framework is more desirable. The union is seeking advice to determine if these nurses can still take industrial action to support their lower-paid colleagues, although some of the nurses who receive the full pay award are keen to remain outside the dispute.

Pay in practice
Article Abstract:
Many nurses are outraged by the Pay Review Body's recommended 1% national pay rise, with those working in independent nursing homes and as GP practice nurses unsure of the percentage of top-up pay award they are likely to receive from their employers. Student nurses are also angered by the unions' campaign for a 3% pay rise for all trained nurses while the students' wages have been frozen and their grants reduced. Some claim the students will benefit when they qualify and should focus on the results of local pay bargaining.

Money talks
Article Abstract:
There is concern within the Royal College of Nursing (RCN) about the high level pay for senior staff, eight of whom earn over 70,000 pounds sterling per annum. Among them is Christine Hancock, the general secretary, whose salary is 84,609 pounds sterling per annum, not including employee benefits. According to Bobbie Chadwick a RCN council member from Yorkshire, it is important to pay such people well in order to keep them, as they are some of the best staff in the country.
