DoH rings the changes for NHS Direct; nurses are concerned about NHS Direct's ability to cope with government expansion plans

Article Abstract:

The British Department of Health plans to make the National Health Service Direct phone service the first step most patients will take to getting medical care. To do this, National Health Service Direct will be expanded to handle 10,000 more calls by 2006 and increase the number of nurses working for the service by 500. Nurses fear the expansion will reduce the quality of the service.
