Doctor, doctor, it's time to wake up
Article Abstract:
The UK government's committment to improving the health of the nation is being undermined by the reluctance of doctors to embrace innovative ideas central to the care of patients. The British Medical Association has failed to give its backing to the 24-hour medical helpline run by nurses, NHS Direct, claiming it has not been properly assessed and could causes more problems than it solves. Public response to the service has been extremely positive, therefore doctors should re-assess their view of the service and realise both they and patients will benefit from the advice given by competent and trained nurses.

School for scandal?
Article Abstract:
The UK government appears to be taking steps to ensure that the boards that now govern the NHS comply with the highest standards of conduct, following scandals calling into question the financial integrity of some boards. A steering group has been formed to investigate the question of probity and accountability in the NHS, and a code of ethics for health-sector managers is being considered by the Institute of Health Service Management. Steps are also being taken to ensure that a wider range of people are appointed to NHS boards, to better represent the communities that actually pay for the NHS.

Limited vision
Article Abstract:
UK chief nurse Yvonne Moores has revised UK nursing strategy for the 1990s in 'Vision for the Future.' It contains 12 targets formulated in response to National Health Service reform and changing practices. The targets aim to improve nursing practice through re-evaluation and nurses' self-criticism. However, some have criticised the document for its political nature.
