Easing patient discomfort

Article Abstract:

The successful management of vomiting and nausea in patients with advanced illness is vital to promote emotional and physical comfort and prevent distress which causes the patients to become demoralised. Some illnesses can create feelings of nausea or cause vomiting through treatment-related, as well as disease-related, factors. The cause can often be identified by observing patterns and subsequently seeking to maximise the use of non-pharmacological and pharmacological interventions. Techniques for the management of vomiting and nausea are decribed.

Palliative care and learning disabilities: the particular palliative care needs of people with learning disabilities are being overlooked

Article Abstract:

Terminal illness such as cancer is a common cause of death amongst people with learning disabilities, but serious illness is not always picked up in the early stages. People with learning disabilities may not recognize warning signs such as pain, and even if they do, they may not be able to communicate the symptoms. Close cooperation between carers and professionals involved is necessary to the maximum and appropriate support, and nurses need to be able to recognize abnormal behaviour that may indicate illness.
