Effect of verification bias on screening for prostate cancer by measurement of prostate-specific antigen

Article Abstract:

The PSA test threshold for recommending a prostate biopsy in men younger than 60 years old should be lowered from 4.1 ng per milliliter to 2.6 ng per milliliter. A mathematical analysis of 6,691 men who were screened for prostate cancer found that lowering the biopsy threshold would increase the number of cancers detected without substantially increasing the number of false-positive tests and unnecessary biopsies. This would allow men to be treated while their cancer is still in the early stage.

Preoperative PSA velocity and the risk of death from prostate cancer after radical prostatectomy

Article Abstract:

A study is conducted with 1095 men with prostate cancer to evaluate the risk of death after radical prostatectomy. Those at most risk were the men whose prostate-specific antigen (PSA) level increased by more than 2.0 ng per milliliter during the year before diagnosis.
