Effects of Prenatal and Postnatal Methylmercury Exposure From Fish Consumption on Neurodevelopment
Article Abstract:
Fish contaminated with methylmercury (MeHg) eaten during pregnancy do not appear to have a significant adverse effect on subsequent child development. Researchers in the Republic of Seychelles analyzed hair samples of 711 mothers before and after pregnancy and their children at the age of 66 months. The children were also tested for developmental abnormalities using six neuropsychological tests. The average hair content of methylmercury was about 6-7 parts per million in the women and children. Mercury exposure during pregnancy did not increase the rate of developmental abnormalities in the children.

Maternal Psychological Distress and Parenting Stress After the Birth of a Very Low-Birth-Weight Infant
Article Abstract:
Hospitals should plan some kind of follow-up service for mothers of very-low-birth-weight (VLBW) babies. A three-year follow-up of 206 women who gave birth to a VLBW baby found that they had more psychological distress than 123 mothers of babies who were born at term. This psychological distress continued for up to two years in the mothers of VLBW babies who had a lung disease called bronchopulmonary dysplasia. Mothers of VLBW babies who did not develop normally were more likely to suffer from depression.
