Effects of early antiretroviral treatment on HIV-1 RNA in blood and lymphoid tissue: a randomized trial of double versus triple therapy

Article Abstract:

A three-drug regimen including a protease inhibitor is necessary to suppress HIV infection even in asymptomatic with relatively high CD4 cell counts. This was the conclusion of a study of 42 HIV patients who received double or triple therapy.

Long-term evaluation of T-cell subset changes after effective combination antiretroviral therapy during asymptomatic HIV-infection

Article Abstract:

Treating HIV patients before they develop symptoms can maintain their immune function provided the treatment completely suppresses viral reproduction. This was the conclusion of a study of 23 asymptomatic HIV-infected patients.

Why is highly active antiretroviral therapy (HAART) not prescribed or discontinued?

Article Abstract:

Many doctors do not prescribe highly active antiretroviral therapy (HAART) because they believe the patient will not take the drugs or might develop severe side effects. Side effects are also one of the reasons HAART is discontinued, according to the Swiss HIV Cohort Study.
