Encouraging News From the SERM Frontier
Article Abstract:
The drug raloxifene is an example of a drug that mimics the action of estrogen in some parts of the body, but blocks the action of estrogen in other parts of the body. Drugs that do this are called selective estrogen receptor modulators, or SERMs. Estrogen has beneficial effects such as keeping bones strong and lowering the risk of heart disease but it also increases the risk of breast and endometrial cancer. SERMs may mimic the positive aspects of estrogen while minimizing its negative aspects. A 1999 study found that raloxifene significantly reduced the risk of breast cancer among postmenopausal women with osteoporosis.
