Energy expenditure and physical activity in relation to bone mineral density in women with anorexia nervosa

Article Abstract:

A study was conducted to determine the effect of physical activity and energy expenditure on total bone mineral density (TBMD) in women with anorexia nervosa. TBMD was measured by using dual x-ray absorptiometry, average daily metabolic rate (ADMR) was measured by doubly labeled water method, and sleeping metabolic rate (SMR) was measured by using respiration chamber. Results indicate that TBMD, ADMR, and SMR are significantly low in women with anorexia nervosa. However, physical activity has a positive effect on bone density.

24h energy expenditure during a standardized activity protocol in young and elderly men

Article Abstract:

A 36-hour experiment to determine the 24 hour energy expenditure (EE), sleeping metabolic rate (SMR), diet-induced thermogenesis (DIT) and energy expenditure of physical activity (EE(sub act)) helped illustrate that the 13 young and 14 elderly men involved in the experiment showed identical mean energy losses for low-intensity chores. Both age groups had similar SMR and EE(sub act) rates. The young people showed significantly high 24 hour EE and DIT rates.
