How nurses can influence policy

Article Abstract:

The nursing profession should examine both how its members are influenced by health policy developments, and also how nurses can become more involved in shaping policy. An example of the reactive aspect suggests that nurses are seriously influenced by purchasing policies. They are closely involved in purchasing decision outcomes, but their alienation from the decision-making process has a negative effect on morale. The nursing profession could become more proactive in policy-making through a clearer sense of its own skills, status and joint views.

Epidemiology in infection control

Article Abstract:

Epidemiology is useful in nursing practice yet many nurses do not adopt an epidemiological approach. Epidemiology is the study of the occurrence of health problems in populations, and the application of retrieved data to health problem control. People can use this approach for a range of purposes including risk identification and service planning. Nurses in the community can use an epidemiological approach in activities including randomized controlled trials or prevalence surveys. Clinical epidemiology is particularly relevant to nursing practice.
